Tyler and the narrator are actually the same person. The narrator suffers from a split personality disorder sometimes called Disassociate Identity Disorder (DID). Sybil is a real life example of this order (see the movie and/or book).

If you haven't seen the movie you need to watch the ENTIRE movie to get it. The ending blew me away! I never saw it coming! I can usually predict movie endings.

The two main characters are actually one person. You find this out in the very end. The guy has a personality disorder. He created another personality without even realizing it.

It has to do with the man not being happy with who he was. So he was unaware that he was also someone else.
