It depends.
In most cases January 2nd is the first day for people to go back to work or school, though my son's school starts January 3rd.

It depends on how much you drink on New Year's eve and day, if the answer is a lot, your holiday extends well into January 2nd! Too bad that you will feel so crummy you won't enjoy it!
Most employers that must staff 24/7 consider New Year's day as the holiday. I have to work tonight and NY eve on nights, so I will be at work when the ball falls in times Square, unless I get cancelled. Tammy lynn and I share a profession, I'm a nurse, too.

This year I get only New Years Day off. (So a three day weekend). Usually it depends on when the holiday falls....if on a Tuesday, they'd probably give us Monday off as well.

3 days for most this year. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Some places are closed for Friday or Tuesday though.
