if you are standing directly on the South pole, the compass should spin. From that point, every direction will equally be north.

Well, one trick point is that the Earth's rotational poles (e.g. the places generally called the North and South Poles) aren't the same places as Earth's magnetic poles are (e.g. your compass doesn't actually exactly point towards 90 degrees north latitude, but to someplace in the far north of Canada).
Of course, that's dodging the question. :) So, if you were at the south *magnetic* pole, what would happen? To be honest I've never heard what actually happens, so what I'm about to say is an educated guess. I believe the compass would want to point more or less upwards (which it really wouldn't be able to do if you were holding it level) because that's the direction the field lines would more or less be going. There could be some small magnetic field in some random horizontal direction, but I do not know how large these would be, though I would guess that likely the horizontal parts of the magnetic field might not be strong enough to overcome the friction on the compas needle, preventing it from moving to point in the direction it would like to.
That's the best answer I have, I'm afraid. I've never been to the southern hemisphere, none-the-less the south magnetic pole, and I've never heard from anyone who has. But that's what I'd have to guess.

Compasses don't work when you are sufficiently close to either magnetic pole. In other words, that pointer thingie inside the compass won't have magnetic lines to align with.
