I believe the events you ask about are found at the close of the book. Phoebe angrily returns Holden's red hunting hat after he refuses to allow her to run away with him. Because she would not return to school they both walk to the zoo. Holden on one side of the street Phoebe on the other.

The red hat is an important symbol that appears throughout the novel. The hat gives Holden an awkward sense of identity. He is in New York City wearing a hat that is usually worn by hunters deep in the forest. Holden even says at one point that this is a "people hunting hat" The hat is the color red which fits the along with the violence imagery. But also the color red mirrors the color of Phoebe's and Ackley's hair. To wear the hat at times can also be seen as taking on the mantel of innocence.
