Hey Dude,

90% of the time, a modem isn't half broken. It is working or not, period.

90% of the time, when there are half not working issues, it is a matter of premise cable wiring and signal leak.

First thing, if you have any wired cable ports in your house that are not being used, goto radio shack, home depot, or Lowes and get cable end caps for these. It will prevent signal leak.

Second, splicers. If you have any of them in your house, make sure that you only have 1 before it goes into your cable modem. Make sure that it is at LEAST a 1.1 GHZ (1100 MHZ) splitter.

Thirdly, make sure your home wiring is RG-6 and not that cheap RG-56.

Finally, have the cable company test the signal strength. You may need a powered signal amplifier for your modem. While signal strength does very little for the tv, it has a lot to do with your cable modem.

If the first two don't work, you might be in the 10% who have some sort of weird problem

If you are just hooked up with one computer, it is wise to call the cable company. They are awesome about running a check while you are on the phone.
It could be that there is some interference somewhere as well that is breaking down your connection, and they need to know it so they can investigate (we had a problem in the cable line about a block from the house, and it took MONTHS to solve, but the cable company was working with us to solve it as well.)
If you are connected with a router with a wireless connection, make sure that if you are using DHCP that you don't have any extra people using your internet connection without your permission. That would slow you down as well.

I know of the problem. Suggest that you remove all cables/connections from the modem and the wall (phone line etc.). Wait 2 full minutes, then reconnect. It ought to work well again.

I was told by the ISP that because we leave our modems on all the time, they need to be reset occasionally.

Hope this works as well for you as it has for me.
