A cycloid is the curve defined by a fixed point on a wheel as it rolls, or, more precisely, the locus of a point on the rim of a circle rolling along a straight line.
epicycloid (circle rolling on outside of another circle, point on the rim of the rolling circle), the hypocycloid (circle on the inside, point on the rim)

use a circular item - coin, coaster, cup etc
draw round it to create a circle
find the exact centre of the circle
place the same item on the circle so that the edge touches the centre - then draw another circle
move the item so that it touches the centre and the point were the two circles are dissected. draw a circle
repeat until you have the effect you want

That is the basis of a toy called a Spirograph that was popular in the 60's. The curves you describe are mathematical curves of the variety technically known as hypotrochoids and epitrochoids.
