Can you get a job in a real estate office as an assistant, or from where do you start?

You'll be a real estate agent once you pass your exam and get your license. You don't have to be someone's assistant and work your way up. Although, if a really hot agent is looking for an assistant that might not be so bad. You'd get immediate experience and he/she would pay you, whereas if you start on your own it could be six months before you sell a house = six months with no paycheck.

But you find a company you want to work with (ABC Realty or whoever) and negotiate a good commission structure, go through their training program, and start selling houses.

Your smartest move is to be a succesful Agent's assistant, even if you do it for little or no money. The books didn't teach what you'll learn from this hands on experience. The books taught you facts, and the law. Your successful Agent will teach you real life "what to do" when things happen... how to respond... how to sell... market... etc..
At the same time, sell your own houses and get your own pipeline going. In 6 to 12 months you will be able to cut loose your asst. job and focus 100% on you. You don't get that from answering phones at the receptionist's desk in a RE office.

here in the midwest realtors are dropping out everyday.
this is due to the slow movement of houses.
if i was you i would go to a mortgage loan office and apply for loan officer job. at least this way you can get a pay check for working. in real estate house don't sell and close you get no money.

After you get your license, you are an agent. Find a broker to sponsor you. Sell houses.

You are not an assistant.
