Emotional walls keep people from getting close to you. This is both good and bad. Walls keep harmful people from hurting you, while they also keep caring people from loving you.

Emotional walls can make a life seem empty at times. You need to be strong enough to allow your life to be touched by others. Simply be selective about the people you surround yourself with, and be open to their positive influences.

I have been accused of iving in my own world, with the proverbial wall up, and obsessing about things I can't change or do anything about. My own world is where I can hide behind my wall and obsess to my hearts content, where no one can get at me unless I let them in. The people on the outside of that emotional wall will say its a bad thing but its human nature to protect yourself. Its a defense mechanism, even the systems of your body have fight or flight response to illness or trauma. Your body will shut down certain area's to keep the more important areas running. You shut down emotionally to keep going day to day.

Not always. Some of them are appropriate self defense mechanisms.

They sometimes keep the cold out*, give me structure to inhabit, can be claustrophobic and always block my view of the outside.

*(but jumpers can also do that, nor is it always cold)
