Our family has always let the kids have a little real wine.
Not much, for someone with a small body has smaller body mass and it takes a LOT less to make a small person tipsy or sick.
However letting them have a little wine (or beer) when they are little takes away the mystery and excitement of liquor. This way when they turn 15 and 16 and their friends sneak beer or they turn 18 and all the gang wants to sneak into a bar their reaction is "So WHY is this cool and exciting and a big deal? I've had wine with dinner since I was 4. It isn't that big a deal." They don' t think getting drunk is "cool" and that eliminates a lot of the teenage problems that relate to booze.

Mother of three here. Once a year, on New Years Eve, each of my kids are permitted one glass of wine. This is something that they look forward to all year and a tradition that they will never let me forget. Every year I pour the wine... every year they are the happiest kids in the world... and every year after they go to bed I end up pouring out three glasses of wine with no more than an 1/2 an inch of liquid missing from each. Two of my three are on their own now... but the one that is left is all ready to waste his glass this year!

Don't have kids- but my parent always gave us one glass of the real stuff- we usually switched back to sparkling because we thought the wine was gross.

When were celebrating, they get the sparkling wine, in our fancy wine glasses, and they get to make the toast, and my son said,,,,,,to the best mommy,,,,,,it was soooo sweet.
