This sounds odd, but i tried it and it worked...
Buy a bottle of cheap cola - the sugary kind not diet (you can use the branded stuff but this way is cheaper). Pour it into the bowl, wet all of the inside and leave overnight before flushing.

Alternatively, buy a limescale removing toilet bleach and use the same method.

Limescale is basically calcium carbonate precipitated from hard water,. The only way to remove it is to use an acid based cleaner such as Harpic Limescale remover (UK) which contains hydrochloric acid . This reacts with the insoluble scale to give carbon dioxide and soluble calcium chloride. Never use acid products with bleach as this will gas you with chlorine !
Read the instructions, wear rubber gloves and protect yourself from any splashes. If not in the UK check out your hardware store etc for any suitable acid containing cleaner.
Once you have cleaned off the scale you can use bleach occasionally to remove any stains ( this is a bit futile as the next time you use the lavatory you are back where you started from) !!

Limescale is a very alkali substance. This means that any reasonably acidic substance should neutralise it and get rid of it. Vinegar is a good substance, easily available from around the house to clean it out, just pour a little in and scrub it around with a toilet brush if you don't want to waste money on expensive products.

Mix a paste with flour and vinegar or lemon juice and flour. Slap it onto limescale and leave over night. The acid in the lemon/vinegar will disolve limescale. Cover it with clingfilm to prevent drying out. I use lemon because it smells so clean and is harmless.

Try soaking it in limescale remover and then scrub with old toothbrush ensuring your wearing rubber gloves, If this fails bale out the water at bottom and soak limescale in vinegar for a few hours. Then use old toothbrush to remove. Flush and it should all be gone :-) remember to throw away the old toothbrush straight away! Have fun and happy 2007

There is plenty on the market. All toilet cleaning brands have a limescale remover in one form or another

theres this stuff on the market called KABOOM, it works brilliantly, you pour a capful into your toilet and leave it for however long they say on the back, and it foams up and removes any yuck!! then just get a toilet bruah, wipe off any excess, and use a normal toilet cleaner to rinse off any more germs and limescale! hope this helps

They say if your pour coke (not diet coke) down the toilet and leave over night that takes it off. its ment to be true.
Or use a Limescale remover called limelight works. do it last min before bed so it works over night. bleach is good but that only whitens it doesn't remove it

Either a bottle of cheap cola or a denture cleaning tablet (courtesy of Kim & Aggie)

Either option, leave for a few hours then clean - that should get rid of it.
