10 and 12 point is common paper thicknesses, 12 is thicker, it will be about as thick as a business card, 12 point should be okay in a consumer printer, though it is thick.
Edit: And paper weight is NOT measured by inches, it has to do with the mass of an uncut ream, 500 sheets, source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_size

I think paper thickness is measured by the number of sheets in an inch-thick stack of paper. But I think what you're talking about are type font sizes.

paper is usually measured in pound weight. The higher weight is thicker. Usually more expensive. If points you are probably looking at font size. The higher number is a larger print size. I did art layout, camera work and plating at a print shop. Have also run a press.

What I know of the unit of measurement for paper thickness is "substance". I usually see them on the covers of reams of bond papers "Substance 16" "Substance 18"... "Substance 24". The higher the 'substance' the thicker.
I am not sure if this applies to the papers used in greeting cards. Do they use bond papers?
Well, I'm not sure but just shared this in case this information is related to your question.

well 12 is thinker but the best place you can find out be a print/photo shop. if your in London the store Raymonds would know if not you really need to feel it to see which one is thicker, also if you are printing at home then make sure it will feed okay in your printer and not get jamed.
good luck!

You sure you're not talking about font size? 12 is bigger.
