Hey Dudette,
Depends! Is it for storage or for programs.
Most people want it for backup or additional storage. Right now, you pay more for external portability, but it might be worth it. You will be able to move it and run with it.
I hold a class called, "So you have a digital camera. Now what?" and I ALWAYS suggest that users have an external hard drive to back up all their pictures. Keep this handy in case of a fire. You can grab it and run out of the house; saving your pictures.

An internal drive is both cheaper, faster and for me an easier bet. You get more gigs for your money but you may not really need a 750GB drive. If you have no technical know how though and do not feel comfortable opening up your PC you can find some good deals on externals. They are super convenient if you want to bring movies or for me anime over to a friend's house rather than burning you just pick up the drive and bring it over. They all have USB ports so it's pretty compatible with almost any PC.

It does matter on which computer - is it really old, a laptop, a desk model, etc. If it is new enough to have 2.0 USB ports as against 1.0 then you will be able to use an external one and save yourself reformatting and starting over on an internal hard drive.
Have you thought of buying a 4 gig flash drive and moving all your data files there. Around $35 on sale and so easy and quick. Leaves your computer intact.

If you plan to use just one drive and copy everything over to it, then you need an internal hard drive. That is what your motherboard will be looking for.
If you want something to store info on and to take to other computers (possibly) or to use for backups, then external would be the way to go.
Before you go external, make sure you have enough usb ports to plug it into.

Well, it's really a matter of preference. External hard drives are nice because you can carry them around. However, internal drives are a little cheaper and faster.

If you plan to take your data with you wherever you go, then external is better because you can plug it out easily and take it with you.
But if you are just a home user and want to keep all data in your computer, then you should go with internal hard drive.

Both are fine, one of my relatives used the external one for storing lots of stuff. The computor store will advise you if you go there or you can just go and buy the external hard drive yourselves.

Internal are cheaper.
Externals offer the ability to take your data off the premises and use it on other computers.
