There was a catcher by that name with the St.Louis Browns during the 1930s who contracted Phemlo's Disease and did not have the funds to pay for the surgery that could save his life. (This was well before the days of medical insurance.) A post-season barnstorming game was scheduled between the Browns and the Homestead Grays of the ***** League to raise the money for Saddam's operation. I don't recall if the Browns beat the Grays or the Grays beat the Browns, but it was a stirring contest whose proceeds enabled Hussein to live and laugh another day. It was during his unsuccessful relapse after Phemlo's surgery that he uttered the words you quote. You could look it up.
