Telling your friend is nourishing the moral value of a friendship, however "does this conflict with ethic principles regarding your company's policies?Are you in a position where you are not supposed to know this information?If so, how did you obtain it?Can this get other employees in trouble? What is the "butterfly effect" of telling what you know?"
Not telling your friend isn't exactly the moral thing to do either. The only reason why you would not disclose this to him obviously is due to ethical considerations about your work place,such as who else may this effect, jeopardizing your job and finacial security,contributing to a rather uncomfortable work climate for co workers,etc. A true friend always understands why we do or don't do certain things. A true friend understands that as special as a friendship can be, one must take care of himself or herself first. I would keep this to myself unless I could confide in my friend to not jeopardize my position as well.

It might be better for him to find out from a friend and start looking for a new job asap. That would also give him time to take in the news and react better when he is officially told. Unless he has anger problems. Just don't tell him on New Years! That would be horrible.

This is a tough situation you are in but I would NOT tell my friend.
This is something that MUST come from your boss; if you were
to tell....you would just be jeopardizing your position as well as your friendship.

No, you shouldn't tell him because you never know, they could change their minds at the last minute. If it does happen and he asks why you didn't tell him, say you were waiting foir them to change their minds.
