Poverty in the U.S. .Kind of like being wealthy in most other countries?The poor have both TVs and cars?

Inner city poor perhaps... America's rural poor live in conditions that might make you squirm. No plumbing or electricity... work gone overseas.

I've travelled to Mexico, Philippines, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and other places where I've seen TRUE poverty...

But it's amazing how screwed up our priorities are here in America... kids have cell-phones but no medical care. Veterans are homeless and our kids sink lower and lower in education levels. As a people we live on credit to buy luxeryies, and as a Nation we sell our country for cheaper products

I left the Navy in 1998, and a year later was homeless when my home burned. I lived on the street for 4 months while working a 12 hour day... got an apartment kept working and saving... now own two homes... and no debt other than mortgage.

One home is in Philippines where I can live like a King... or raise a family carefully and lovingly...

owning a tv and a car is not supposed to be a luxury in this day and age .So They have tvs.Are they flat screen tvs or blue ray technology?So they own cars.Are these state of the art cars or just something with four wheels to get them from a to b?These people have what are deemed the basic necessities in our modern high tech age.They need cars to get to work or togo in search of their daily bread and travelling is made slightly easier.They need to keep up as best as they could ,with world affairs and event and tvs fulfill this role apart from the basic entertainment.They cannot really afford to take holidays abroad,have lavish dinners,or keep a sophisticated lifestyle like you or me.Hey!They cant afford their own lap tops or pcs or even the luxury of wearing designer outfits.Poverty is a problem that world governments need to address through a better education facility to accomodate people from this sort of backgrounds without making them feel any different from their richer counterparts..In addition,poverty has different levels in different societies .ie someone who may be considered poor in Britain or America may not necessarily be so in Brazil,or the Congo or Guatamala..

Yes they own homes, rent homes and are fed. If you make less than 40,000 dollars a year in the USA for a family of 3 you are poverty level. That figure increased with the cost of living and minimum wage increases. So your point is.....

please do some research on poverty in the USA before you ask questions like this. Do you realize how many working familys are sleeping in a car tonight? Do you know how many children did not watch cartoons this morning because they were to busy walking the streets?(because alot of shelters make you leave at daylight and come back at nightfall? Do you realize how often parents have to choose between food and meds? Do you know how long it has been since YOU did something to help?

I agree Hedy. But I also understand what he is getting at. Many people in this country are living "high on the hog" when in reality, two (2 )missed paychecks would put them on the streets. Add in the debt they already owed on credit cards, car payments, mortgage and ...it all gets taken back so quickly.

40,000....are you kidding?

For two parents and three children the family would have to make less than 24,000 to be considered below the "poverty line". For one person it is 9,800.

In order for someone to make 24,000 they would have to make 12.00 an hour. 5.50 an hour is only 11,000 a year.....sure as heck not enough to support yourself(let alone children)...yet it's above the poverty line.

But believe it or not......there are thousands of families living below that in the US...just under 40 million live below the poverty line.....many of those are children.

Cell phones, iPods, DVD players, hot water, washing machines, dryers, dish washers, indoor toilet, toilet paper, dirt floors, two pillows, blankets, furniture, medicine, welfare, SSDI, school, school bus, books.

Poor is not the same as homeless, try living on the streets and you will see how hard it is to get back to being poor again.
