I don't know of any sites that will give you a definitive dead or alive answer but below are some links for finding out about the deaths of people (think you may have to pay for one of them). Short of Googling them or looking in the phone book the only other idea is a PI

If its someone well-known, you can search for them in wikipedia. It gives birth and death years.

The mormons have genealogy records online, including births, marriages and deaths, for people in the USA, UK and other countries. This isn't limited to mormons.

If you find a birth record, but no death record, then they are probably still alive. If you find no birth record, they may just not be logged in the system.

I don't know that it will tell you if they are alive or dead, but in google people search, you can find them, it will cost you under 50dollars , its worth every penny, but once you get their phone number and address, you'll have to do some calling yourself to find out that information. hope this helps you. in the UK you can search death records but you will need their date of birth as well as their name
