Practice and always aim for the head with all weapons. Battle Rifles are very good and expecially this noob combo.

First charge up a plasma pistol, then shoot someone with it. As soon as you shoot it quickly get your battle rifle and shoot him in the head until he dies, which usually requires 1-2 bursts from your BR if you hit him with the plasma pistol.
