I was sorely tempted to come on and say "Stop doing things that DO annoy them then....!" but in the meantime you've already had some more sensible help I'm glad to say - but anyway, both yahoo and Google have pop-up blockers on their toolbars. Why don't you use those?

You can install a free pop blocker
http://toolbar.yahoo.com
http://toolbar.google.com
If you're still getting pop ups with a pop up blocker, then your PC is infected with adware. Use these scans to remove it, both free.
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Popup blockers will only stop web based popups. They can help somewhat, but if you are getting excessive popups, and popups even when you are offline, it means you have trojan downloaders on your machine that are calling out to deliver the pop up ads.
Try a full cleaning and dis-infection routine.
This is the one I use (it will take some time).
1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/home/
2. Scan for trojans and spyware and remove (free online scan) with Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/
If you are using an older version of Windows (pre XP-SP2) you may also be getting "Messenger Service" popups which are caused by Microsoft leaving the almost never used Windows Messenger Service enabled by default. This was corrected in Windows XP- Service Pack 2.
Understand that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Live Messenger" "yahoo Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble.
To disable this service in older versions of Windows use the free, Shoot The Messenger from:

Good luck.

if u r getting excessive pop-ups that means your PC is already "infected". It's best to clean it up rather than installing yet even more unknown stuff. go to
http://www.symantec.com/search
either DIY or get a tech friend to help you remove the offending malware. the symantec site is very useful, it has enough FREE info to remove malware.
Once this is done, install a good Firewall to protect your PC. It will also help if you turn off all unnecessary Xp services. http://support.microsoft.com has instructions on how to do it.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:
