we are like sheep, the government has effectively terrified us into believing that we are powerless and keeps our thoughts on fears like we lose our jobs and our homes and all kinds of stuff to keep us quiet, while they do what they please is this why people do not protest anymore? they are afraid and also have been lulled into a numb existence by their toys and materialistic crap?

Well, it isn't only toys and materialistic crap. It is getting so a person has to work harder and has less time to devote to politics let alone his family. That and fear take focus away from corruption of government and the messes the government gets us into.

We've done this to ourselves by buying into partisan bull crap and letting the media and hollywood dictate how our society should behave.
Most people don't protest because they're apathetic to anything other than themselves, not because they're "scared". You can't blame the government for the fact that more Americans will vote for American Idol than for the Presidential elections.
