My opinion is that the pay-as-you-go phones are total rip-offs. I would never "turn my nose" at anyone for having one, but I do think it is a complete waste of money.
Of course, I do see the "up-side" to pay-as-you-go if you know that you either can't "stick" to a contract or are unwilling to do so. After all, breaking a contract with a cell phone company can result in a hefty cancellation fee.
It's definitely something to think about carefully before making a decision. Don't worry about what others think... Do what you feel is best according to your own circumstances.

Unless you use hundreds a minutes a month and/or do a lot of text messaging, pre paid is the way to go. There is no way to tell a pre paid phone number from a contract phone. I was spending 80+ dollars a month for 2 phones on a contract. I settled my contract and now pay a straight 25 cents a minute. Remember, I only use 10 dollars or less of time a month.
One month I used only 14 minutes on my contract phone. Let see 80+ dollars or $3.50, see my point.

I think the pay as you go is a good thing for teenagers getting there first phone. It will make them more responsible about it.
The contract ones are fine also. but know ahead of time what you are agreeing to. Make sure you get the insurance, it's another 5 dollars a month, but can save you some money in the long run if you lose or break your phone. and if you like to text message, get the unlimited. my daughter ended up with an extra 168.10 on her bill from so much texting. they add up fast.

I would go with a monthly/yearly contract. I used to have a pay-as-you go but it cost the same, if not more, than a monthly bill. With a pay-as-you go phone you have to worry about putting more min. on your phone, with a contract all you have to worry about is not going over your mins. Plus if you get a 2 year contract, you can get great deals on phones.

I prefer the pay as you go. Check the plans though. For instance, Verizon charge a fee of 99c per day, use the phone or not. The best I have found is Boost (which is Nextel/Sprint) the only daily charge is 20c if you want internet, and they have the nextel walkie talkie feature which works with all Nextel customers.

I even have had the two kinds, and that i want Pay A You bypass in case you do not use it alot. Having a settlement is expenisve, even for little minutes. I even have tmobile ideal now, you will desire to purchase $a hundred (1000 minutes) and use them over the direction of a three hundred and sixty 5 days. it somewhat is like 3 months of a settlement, and sure you have much less minutes yet once you want it for emergencies and to not chat whilst you're in line at Starbucks it somewhat is a thank you to bypass.

Contract worked better for me. But my little sister did better with the pay as you go. My boyfriends son ran up a bill of 300 dollars on his cell phone and 80 dollars of that was text messaging. But he didn't care daddy still paid for his phone. So If its a kid, pay as you go, and make them pay for it.

personally i definately think pay as you go,theres no connection fees or line rentals but u do get more call time and messages for your money.but with pay as you go you cant go over your limit and get hit with massive charges(as i found out wen i was on contract)but if ur making alot of business calls or spend alot of time on ur mobile the contract is the best but if you want it for something to use occasionally then definately pay as you go(and youl save money).i hope this has helped you in some way.

i say go with whatever service that goes with your phone. some phones with contracts are free over the internet (TMobile). pay as you go phones are nice, but dont have as many perks as plans and contracts do. (such as no new phones every year and no "In" when you use verizon) of course some pay-as-you-go plans are great, but i prefer plans.
in summary- go with your favorite phone model. then pick a plan/pay-as-you-go for that phone!

Depends on your usage pattern, and what people think should be the very last of your concerns.
I took a $29.95 plan with 300 anytime minutes and free weekends only (no free night ones)
But then I have no intention of using the da*mn thing 24/7. Just when I really need it. ;-)
