Sweetheart,
First of all, do not ever let weight stop you from doing things you really want to do. This is my big regret in life.
Second, ballet kicks butt, it is not an easy workout! You will be a very healthy girl, with a beauty that others will admire when you learn proper posture and gracefulness.
Leotards, tights & a dance skirt is usually slimming. Don't worry about going en pointe, you have time for that. When it is time to stand on your toes, your teacher will help you.
Good luck & Go dance!

Congratulations on your decision to attend an arts school! Regarding your question, I've been dancing since I was 5 and I definitely don't have the typical "ballerina" build. While most of the time the physical activity alone is enough to keep my weight at a healthy level, seeing how tiny some of the girls are has certainly warped my perception of what normal is. It's important to bear in mind that even if you find yourself comparing your body to those of other dancers, they're likely not looking at you with the same critical eye. As long as you work hard at what you're doing and get good advice from your teachers, you'll do very well and that's what people will notice. Regarding wardrobe, it depends on what your school's dress code allows, but dark colors are always flattering, as are leotards with 3/4 or long sleeves. Skirts are always a fun option, and look into a cool warmup garment if that's allowed.

The first rule of dance is to have fun. If you're too worried about what other people think of you in your leotard then you will not have fun. Please don't worry, honey, you're so young. You will grow and I'm sure you're a beautiful young lady. Just be excited that you get to dance!
As for standing on your toes, that will come with time. Your teacher will work you up to that and when you are ready and strong enough, it will happen.
Again, just have fun and don't worry about what others think. If you're really worried about being overweight, then ballet is probably the perfect thing for you to do. I don't know of many better ways to lose weight or become more in shape.

Congrats on your choice to attend the arts school. Don't worry about your weight so much -- geez you are only 10. (You have the majority of you life still left to obsess about your weight.)
I attended a middle school like yours with a 2 hour block of dance everyday. The classes will definitely help you tone up & you'll be taught everything you need to know... including the proper techniques leading up to pointe. I am assuming you'll be starting with basic classes (as opposed to advanced). When I danced I was in the middle level (and even chunkier than most in my class) - almost half of the year was only demi-pointe. Don't worry! You must build up your strength & endurance first before jumping into toe shoes. Believe me, your instructors may politely tell you to lose some weight but they won't / shouldn't be weight-loss nazis. After a few days or weeks you'll stop being so shy in your leotard. Focus on the dance, your technique & just have fun.

Honey, you're 10 years old. Weight should not be an issue. You have plenty of time to grow and ballet is GREAT for you. I'm glad you're doing and think you'll have a good time. I bet in about 2 years, you won't need to worry about the weight thing at all and you'll already be so good that you'll be way ahead of your peers.
Good luck and truly enjoy what you're doing!!!

Hi! I am ten too. I ve been damcing since I was 3. The trick is to wear a skirt. If your teacher allows get a semi long one. his will cover up some of your legs a bit! Dancing is great exercice! And you shouldnt be on pointe yet if you just started. Otherwise your teacher should show you how to get up. It takes a lot of hard work but I have faith in you!
Good luck and happy dancing!

Ask your parents to take you to the pediatrician and have him give you a diet. You will learn to stand on your toes as you advance in ballet school. You don't have to do it right away.

My wife was overweight when she took ballet. It's no problem, just try and enjoy the dancing, don't worry about what others think. Easier said than done I know.

you dnt need 2 worry about weight at ur age. just trying 2 eat healthy and practice dance everyday. your 2 young really 2 stand on your toes. i myself am 13 and have just got pointe shoes. pointe is easy 2 catch up on and 13 is wen ur ankles are fully developed , any younger and u could damage ur ankles and ruin ur dance career if u took ballet seriously. so dnt worry and really u shudnt stand on pointe with out the proper shoes, u mainly stand on the balls of ur feet aneway x
