There are pictures of Cheney and Saddam shaking hands and smiling when he was our ally. But fickle american govt tends to support many horrible dictatorships, like pinochet, we helped him overthrow a democratically elected president, much like we are trying to do apparently in Venezuela even though the marxist leaning president there was democratically elected. We like to say we support democracy, but only when it is in our interest. Our leadership says we support Israel because it is the only democracy in the middle east, yet more than 50% of its citizens are prohibited from voting--you must be jewish to vote, the palestinian citizens, who have israeli citizenship, cannot participate.

no, but the US administration does not support people because they are good guys. they support those who can help further the US cause (as does every other government). this is the reality.
