It's difficult to get to the UK from Ghana and the process is long, slow and expensive. If you want to live and work in the UK you need to apply for Indefinite Leave to Stay (ILS) and the first thing to do is to apply through the British Consulate in Accra - can't rememebr the name of the street it's on but it's only a 5 minute walk from the Police Headquaters and the Eastern Ring Road.

You'll also need to prove that you're financially independent - either you'll need to already have a lot of money (hundreds of millions of cedis) or a guaranteed job for when you're in the UK. You'll also have to show that you have a suitable place to live when you arrive in the UK.

You can get educated in the UK but you'll need to be sponsored and once you finish your studies you'll have to return to Ghana.

Be aware that the UK isn't all it's made out to be. There's more crime in London per day than there is in Accra per year and the people are nothing like as friendly as they are in Ghana.

As you know, in Ghana you can talk to complete strangers, wherever you go you're always made welcome and Gahnaians will do everything possible to help you - it's not at all like that in the UK and you'll find yourself very much on your own.

There's already a huge number of joiners and carpenters in the UK. When some of the eastern European countries joined the European Union it meant citizens could live and work in the UK without any formalities. As a result huge numbers of people moved to the UK, particularly those who had been employed in the construction industry.

My advice (and I'm being serious here) would be to stay in Ghana and establish your own building company. Offer a complete service so that when someone wants a new house or another floor building the only person they have to contact is you. As it is, arrangements have to be made with the block makers, wall builders, concreters, joiners etc etc. It all takes a long time and invariably there are major problems. When something does go wrong there's no one to sort it out and work invariably stops.

It won't be easy, establishing your own business never is. But if you base your business on a European model and are prepared to work as hard and as diligently as Ghanaians do, then you're onto a winning formula.

Oh, and another thing, the weather in the UK is horrible. What we call a hot day is what you'd coinsider to be a cold day and there's no such thing as a dry season over here.

Heres a revolutionary idea. Stay in your own country and gain employment there!
Do you really think the U.K. needs yet another foreigner working over here?
I am quite sure Ghana needs more joiners and carpenters than the United Kingdom.

what advantages can you give this country?immigration will probably ask this question, how long do you intend to stay, surly with qualifications can be better used in 3rd world countries maybe not payed as well as the UK but you have to start on the bottom rung some where, you will get the experience and then maybe consider coming here, but don't use us as a passport to citizenship,we have enough trouble with the Europeans community,.
