I've had this trouble about twice. I fixed it once using the steps below, but the next time it happened I had to contact eMachines. So if these steps don't work, you prob should call your PC company maker (eg Gateway, Dell, etc)
Right click my Computer > click Properties > click on the tab Hardware > click on the first button, Device Manager > double click to expand "DVD/ CD rom drives" > right click all the programs you see > click uninstall, or delete > Now restart you computer.

Hi,
Please go through this troubleshooting steps..
CD/DVDs not Read
1. Check the drive status in My Computer and in Device Manager. If the drive is detected properly and the device status if fine in DM, continue with step 4.
2. If the device has yellow exclamatory marks in DM, reinstall the device drivers for CD/DVD Drive. If you find any of the following error codes:
Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41
Provide the dougknox-Upper filter Lower filter fix. Download and run the fix from this link:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
If the fix fails to not work, try these steps
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph07146&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
3. If it fails again, try Windows XP Repair. If that too fails, then go to steps 6.
4. If the drive neither found in DM nor found in My Computer, then there might be a hardware detection issue. In this case, try to resetting the BIOS once. And then undo any hardware or software changes done recently.
If it fails again, then ask the customer to remove and reseat the drive once. Suggest this, only if the customer is comfortable. Provide the manual to the EU, also warn the user that if any physical damages are done during the removal process, the warranty will void.
5. If the drivers and the device status is fine, but not reading the CDs, ask the EU to try reading different medias. OR if the System reads CDs fine and not reading DVDs, then reinstall the DVD Decoder once.
6. If all the above solutions fails to resolve the issue, run a Compaq Diagnostics Test to confirm the status of the drive. If the drive fails the Test, then it should be replaced.
You can download the Compaq Diagnostics Tool from the following links:
For Notebooks released before R3000:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp22501-23000/SP22711.exe
For R3000 and all other latest Model Notebooks released after R3000:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software3/COL7178/ob-21485-1/SP25498.exe
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download the file and Save it to Hard Disk.
2. Double Click on the file to run.
3. It will create the SWSETUP FOlder in C Drive.
4. After running that, please Open My Computer, Open C Drive, then Open SWSETUP Folder, and then Open DISK1 Folder.
5. Run SETUP.EXE File.
This will install the Diagnostics for Windows in Control Panel.
To run Disganotics for Windows, please take these steps:
1. Click Start>Control Panel.
2. Inside Control Panel, please Open Diagnostics for Windows Icon.
3. Select Test tab.
4. Then select CD Drive Test.
NOTE: Please be sure to insert a working CD into the drive while running this test.
It will resolve ur issue .if the issue is still persists please provide detailed info.

If it won't read or write to any CD then the problem is with the CD drive itself most likely. Does it run when you insert a CD like it is used to? Are there any error messages? Make sure your CDs are good by trying one of them on another computer.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
