Surely there is someone who may be able to start you knitting. How about looking in the crafts section of your local library?
Also if you are in the UK there is a new magazine coming out which shows you how to knit and gives you patterns, needles and wool.

there is a new magazine out called the art of knitting which gives you free wool and needles and everhy week it giives you instructions on how to knit qa different square, then sew them alltogether and you have a throw
