there is a book called something like The writers journey:mythic something or another that maps out the 12 steps for the hero. can someone please let me know what they are.

The steps are called "The Hero's Journey".

1. Ordinary World
2. Call to adventure
3. Refusal of the call
4. Mentor
5. First threshold
6. Tests, allies, enemies
7. Approach to the inmost cave
8. Ordeal
9. Reward (seizing the sword)
10. The road back
11. Resurrection
12. Return with the elixir

This has been covered in a book. Book is called "The writer's Journey" by Christopher Vogler, published by Pan. Mine was £14.99
The book covers the basic structure most books/films/ screenplays/ etc follow.

The first step is for the hero to admit he has a problem.

Admit you are an alcoholic.

Must be 11 more steps in the program though.
