Don't be an idiot, kid.
Before trying to run off on some great adventure to wonderful Japan, perhaps you should learn a thing or two *about* it.
First off, for you to get anything outside of a traveling visa (that is, for you to actually be able to live, legally, in Japan), you need a college degree.
Then, for anyone to even consider hiring you for a job so you could actually live even a bit comfortably, you need to learn Japanese. The speaking AND the writing. Given that Japan has three writing systems (hiragana, katakana, and you, as a foreigner, need to know 1,945 kanji to be considered well-off), I doubt you'll just "pick it up" while in a three-year university.
You're probably in America, right? (I like to think of Brits as not so hard-headed, but that's just my own personal fantasy.) America, while you might not think it, is still a brilliant place to live and, at the same time, offers a hell of a lot more than Japan will ever offer you. You have 50 states you can dash off to and hide from your mommy! All speak English, all willing to give you a job, all willing to help you and not treat or even consider you as an "outsider".
Don't just go rushing the hell off to a foreign country and imagine you'll suddenly be "so happy" there because it's obviously a cure to all your problems and woes. Learn a bit more about what you're trying to do and just go for a month or two as a traveler to get a small feel for the country first.

Although I can understand your motive for wanting to go to Japan, that shouldn't be the reason you want to go there. Because I love Japanese, I want to live in Japan someday, and not primarily to 'escape' my parents. I will accomplish escaping my parents like regardless, but if I had any problems with them, running away isn't going to solve it. It sounds like it might be bad, and getting away is one thing. Doing it legally is another.
Plus, this is more of a psychology question. Should you really run away from your problems like this? You should confront your problems instead of running away. You should finish school (high school and college) before moving to any foreign country. You know, there are plenty of great colleges all over the US. Pick one that's far away from your mom, if you must (you should be able to transfer credits, but may need your mom to do that), but don't ruin your chances at a promising career by fleeing to Japan right now.
Regardless of the reasons, you should not move to Japan without some major preparation. Ask yourself what you would really do once you are there. Without a degree, you won't get a job. You really can't establish residency without a real good reason, like a job (there are work visas for that, anyway) or a marriage (and again, there's a work visa for living there under that condition).
Then there's the language. While it's not necessary to know all the jyoyou Kanji (the 1,945 recognized Chinese characters), you're going to want to know a good 500 or so. You also should know the Hiragana and Katakana completely. Colleges offer enough education to get by in Japan for literacy and speaking, but that takes years.
If you have to get away from the situation, don't do it by moving to Japan. Just go somewhere else in the country. It's much easier to live somewhere in your native country than somewhere else. Living in Japan might end up being right for your life. However, you need to establish some things for yourself; and you really should try to solve your problems before doing anything at all.

You just can't go to Japan...A tourist visa is only good for 90 days. After that you would be illegal and deported back to the US. You can't live there for free...And it's now winter time in all of Japan. And it gets VERY cold there! What should you do ? Stay home and try to work things out with your mom. If you think you have problems now, try living in Japan in winter with no place to stay and no money to buy food ! And remember, most Japanese don't speak English.

If you are in the United States, there are 50 states you can move to without a passport, and you don't need to learn a foreign language in most of them (yet). Get a job and an apartment, and in a year or two if you still have the money you can go to Japan for a vacation.

Do you know the language there in Japan? If not, do not go. Are you 21? If not, do not go. The grass is NOT always greener on the other side of the street my friend.

JAPAN IS BEAUTIFUL. BUT GO TO SCHOOL AND TAKE A FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASS, LEARN THE LANGUAGE AND A LOT OF COLLEGES TAKE TRIPS TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS TO A COUPLE OF MONTHS. OR IF YOU JUST WANT TO SEE NEW THINGS AND GET OUT OF THE HOUSE JOIN THE MILITARY YOU WILL SEE LOTS OF NEW THINGS AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO LIVE AT HOME. AND YOU COULD EVEN BE LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET STATIONED THERE TO LIVE AND THE MILITARY PAYS FOR IT ALL!
