Well all I know is you have the right to take 3 months paid maternity and another 3 months unpaid in Britain. An emplyer can not fire you for becoming pregnant and they have to let you go back part time if you wish.
Happy new year

I have been unable to trace such an Act and think that you are referring to the Employment Rights Act 1996. This link will show you the wording of the Act and the word maternity is highlighted, to indicate which parts apply to expectant mothers/new mothers. http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:w2TvuWuMeVUJ:www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1996/1996018.htm+maternity+rights+act&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1

Humm, we have paid leaves for both the father and the mother for 7 months, here. Though you only get 70 % of your wage during that time. ;)

it means while you are pregnant your employer must give you time off to attend all of your anti natal appointments, and when you leave your job to have your baby they must keep your job open if you have told them you are going to return....different employers have different time scales but i think the most common time is 3months.
