The best ways to secure a standard router are the following, if available on your router:

Encryption:
WPA2 - Best
WPA - Very Good
WEP - Good

Passwords:
Change the default router management login information. The defaults are VERY EASY to guess, and if you don't create your own login and password you risk a hacker gaining control of your router and potentially locking you out of it.

MAC authentication:
If your computer is the only one connecting, you can enter the NIC's MAC address into the router management tool so it will only allow your NIC to connect.

SSID:
Consider disabling the broadcast of your SSID. The SSID allows your router's wireless signal to be easily "discoverable." It's like a big flashing sign saying, "hey, come get your wireless internet access over here!"

These are some basic things. There are others as well.

You can setup wep or wpa encryption, then any computer that needs to connect has to use an encryption key.

THe other thing would be mac filtering, all network cards have a mac address so you can set your router to only accept specific cards.

Your router should have administration pages you can set this up in, usually you navigate to http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.2.1.

Also set up a different password for the admin settings on your router, they usualy have no password or a standard default.

in your browser type http://192.168.0.1/ and enter your detials. (If you didnt do the installation urself it shold be username: admin (always) and pw: admin) Click on Wireless settings > WEP Security Encryption and in the box type anything you want and press Generate. this will generate a WEP code. Click apply and log out.
