Could be a wire shorting out against a bracket or something else in the engine compartment. These can be tricky problems to find. Does it happen when you hit a bump or when you take off? If you can establish a pattern to when this problem occurs you may be able to give the repair facility a better explanation of what is going on. This CAN make a difference because it narrows down the diagnosis path.

Yes, these are hard to diagnose. It would help to know what kind of motor we are dealing with here. Assuming no codes are stored as that is what you are saying, the misfire happens too fast for the computer to pick it up. The main problem with all of this GM stuff is the spark plug wire connectors corroding, the coil towers corroding, or carbon tracking of the spark plugs or the plug wires. If this is a quad four, this stuff is still a problem but obviously you will have to remove the complete coil assembly from the top of the motor to check. I have experienced and repaired several of these motors that can stop producing spark at times as well. This ended up being coil problems which can only be repaired with replacement. Low fuel pressure or a plugged fuel filter can cause these problems as well. I know it sounds like a bunch of no help here, but you need to eliminate things before replacing things that you are not sure are buggered. Dive in and see what you can find, Good luck.

I had a '85 Cavalier with a similar problem. This might be worth checking. The ignition coil was loose... the bracket was bolted firmly to the engine, but the magnet/coil/winding was loose in the bracket. Does that make sense? You may have multiple coils but if one is losing it's ground occasionally it would be a difficult problem to find. Hope this helps!

I had an '88 Buick Regal that did this. Never got fixed. Probably just a bad day at the factory, Monday or Friday.

My daughter-in-law had the same problem with her Grand Am. What happened here was that she put ethanol in her car which wasn't set up for that. Went back to regular gas and no problems since.
