we had just returned from a meal out when the brakes failed to operate but the pedal is solid when pushed down and the engine kept stalling as if the hand brake was on, at the same time it was difficult to start the engine without high revs and choke. now i cannot keep the engine running

Sounds like your brake servo has failed, it would help if you specified car / model / year, stalling can be caused by many components failing, since you have a manual choke I guess your car is 15yrs + old ?

you may have a hole in you cars brake servo hose it goes from the servo to the inlet manifold thats y the pedal is hard and the engine is runing bad good luck

Not knowing the year of the car, I would say Vacuum problem caused by vehicles computor signal to braking system.

check the servo pipe,, it goes from the brake servo to the inlet manifold,, if its leaking you should hear it sucking air when the engine is running
