it was recently put in a bit of water (only the base)
and all the songs etc remain.

It's too bad that the base got in the water, because if any other area of your iPod had been put in water, it would have probably survived. If water got into the dock connector, my guess is that you'll have to either replace the battery and hard drive, or get a new one. It's about the same cost wise!

You need to restore it to factory settings!!! Google : How to restore an ipod to factory settings, and the answers are all there if you dont know how :] happened to me a month ago ...
