I don't care for Bush but Saddam only "unified" it by force and ruled it with an iron fist. Unity thru tyranny is that what you want?
Civil War was inevitable as the country was created post-WWI with little thought of the ethnic religious differences of the people there. Eventually Iraq will probably go the way of Yugoslavia and split into seperate countries after some bitter fighting.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein was hanged at dawn on Saturday for crimes against humanity, a dramatic, violent end for a leader who brutally ruled Iraq for three decades before he was toppled by a U.S. invasion in 2003.
In what looked like a swift response by Sunni insurgents loyal to Saddam, a car bomb killed 36 people in a Shi'ite town -- the sort of sectarian attack that has pitched Iraq toward civil war since U.S. troops broke Saddam's iron grip.

I don't agree with capital punishment, because I believe only God has the power of life and death.
Saddam did not unify Iraq, he was merciless in his treatment of Iraqi Kurds - the majority of whom are Sunni Muslims , as was Saddam, and he waged all-out war against the so-called 'swamp-Arabs' around the Shatt-el-Arab, because they were Shi'ites and therefore, obviously, in league with Iran.
He was a dictator and he was supported during most of his 'reign' by the 'West'. And the West should not forget that.

Were have you been for the last 10 years you call forcing people into plastic shredders feet first , gassing hudreds of people to test his new toy nerve gas , killing millions in a war with Iran . torturering thousands of people to death , getting a prisoner to taste his food every morning then shooting then just to test his food ,You call that unifieing a country , take them stupid blinkers of and face the real world

if by unification you mean the tyrannical murderous grip of a meglamaniac,who systematically slaughtered sections of his countrymen because they where of the wrong sect.
how can you justify those acts like the use of piosonous gas upon the kurds these are not the acts of unification but genocide.
he deserved a trial and the outcome of that trial was death.
tried by his own people, executed by his own people.
the real tradegy in this war is the loss of one life, any life but his.
