Friends was a big hit in the UK, Frasier was also a hit. Even though it was often the biggest comedy in the USA, Seinfeld never seemed to take off here and few people I know watched it regularly. Why didn't UK audiences in general seem to like it? For those who are going to reply 'Poor BBC scheduling' consider this - the BBC did screen it at a reasonable hour for a while but it never got great ratings. Sky showed it regularly for a long time. Paramount Comedy have screened it for years, so UK audiences have had access to it! Blue Rat is gettin' upset!

I'm from the UK and Seinfeld is one of my favourite shows. It proves Americans do know about irony, and the series has a nice balance between the surreal and the everyday. If possible could respondents reply with a bit more detail than 'It wasn't funny' - because my reply to that would be 'It was funny. very funny indeed.' See?

Gotta reply to this - I'm from the UK and I think Seinfeld is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, usually when I'm asked to name my favourite TV programme I'll think of Seinfeld first.
I've always yearned for better scheduling when it was shown, as it simply was a difficult time to get to it usually (late night, mid-week). I'll take your word for it that they tried earlier scheduling, but it can really depend what's on the other channel and if it's a major puller, people maybe won't even flick over and check it out.
The one other point I'd make is that whenever I've mentioned Seinfeld to people, I've had 2 reactions: either "Never heard of it" or "I love it and it's really funny but it's hardly ever on". This is the first time I've ever actually heard anyone say it's not funny! And I'm totally surprised! They don't know what they're missing! ;o)

Well all the gags in seinfeld are based on situations that occur pretty much in NYC. UK comedies are pretty much relegated to our public broadcast channels. People in america and people in the UK have very different senses of humor. I find Seinfeld funny, but then again I am from NYC. I find many english comedies funny, but then again I lived in England for a year.
In general, british comedies are like your crossword puzzles, indirect.

there is a huge difference in what constitutes comedy in the US and the UK. Witness The Office - the US remade it and made it more slapstick and it lost a lot of the subtle humour that made it so funny to us Brits. I watched Seinfeld several times. .. there were many funny bits but, generally, it seemed over-acted and too contrived. Just a difference in taste, I guess ...

Don't know - but interesting question.
I wish more UK citizens would weigh-in here and tell us.
As a general rule
UK humor is a bit more subtle and indirect, often working at more than one level of attack.
American humor is a full frontal attack, an in-your- face type humor.
One's not better than the other, although you'll get the nationalists arguing that direction.
Why are sensibilities different ?? Don't know.

Seinfeld IS funny. And it is very interesting question. Generaly, British humor have some diferences with USA humor. I like Monty Pithon, for example, love Black Adder, but love Seinfeld, as well. Have no idea what was problem.

i think seinfeld was terribly over-rated, and the british i think have a more highly developed sense of humor--thats why they didnt find it funny. i didnt find it funny either, and im not even british
it was nothing more than a meaningless series of neurotic ramblings delivered via over-the-top performances of characters that were so over-blown, they were actually "caricatures"
