G'day,
I suggest using the service of whereis.com.au, where you can enter your own address, and then enter the suburb of Phillips Island (which is COWES). Click the 'Get Direction' button and it will give you the best way to go from your address to Phillip Island, including a GPS-like directions to go.
Enjoy the trip and have a terrific new year :)

I regularly travel to phillip island, however not from the CBD, I travel from Melbourne Airport.
I take Citylink, then get off and head to the Sth Eastern suburbs, through the burnley tunnel, (this next bit would be from the CBD i think) onto the monash freeway, turn off at the Sth Gippsland Freeway, and follow the signs to Phillip Island. wou can always go to www.whereis.com and type in the location you are at and then the location in Phillip island and it will give you step by step directions.
Or if you are going bt tour bus, there are a number of options that leave from the CBD. V/Line have a coach service to Cowes Phillip Island
The first site has heaps of info about phillip island, i have given you the specific link to the getting there section.

Go on the Nepean HWY (formally called st kilda road) and turn left to malvern road.
Then, turn left to Burke street and take the M1 entrance.
Continue to drive on the M1 until the exit to South gippsland Freeway. Then take Bass HWY and follow the signs to Phillip Island.
Or, you can go on the M1 from the CBD but this is tollway.
I found train line from the CBD to Phillip Island.

Go down the S.E freeway/tollway. Get off at the Cranbourne exit go through town and keep going. It's pretty simple and sign posted the whole way.
