Does this country hide it's SOCIAL ILLS in prisions?

The US has more people in prison than any other country in the world.
China who we always are told is a totalitarian regime is a distant second, yet china has almost 5 times our population.
In china is a totalitarian regime, what does that make us, insane.

The US has no more and no less social ills than any other country. What we do have is an outdated justice system that punishes all offenses using one standard - the prison. There are numerous solutions to the overcrowded and over-sentencing problems but our legislative system moves like molasses running uphill. Think tanks, special interest groups, and much of the public has been begging and pleading for innovative changes for years. Yet, an example of people in prison are: men who don't pay child support, a 16-year old boy who steals a car, a man who beats his wife, people caught with marijuana, people with multiple drunk driving arrests, an accountant who tinkers with the books, a stock trader who gives out insider information. I could go on and on.
Undoubtably, some people belong in prison - the sociopaths, the pedophiles, the vicious, the violent, the rapists. Locking up those would keep society safer. But I don't feel particularly threatened by a felonious stock trader or a deadbeat dad, or even by a marijuana cigarette. I don't know any answer as long as our legislators keep their head in the sand. They are the only ones who can change the system. Thanx for letting me spout off...

If "they would show executions on TV it would stop about all of the "Ills" as you put it. Why keep someone on Death row for 20 years and then execute them. Give enough time to use what we have now, (DNA) to prove the charges and then do away with the ones that did the crime. This goes for me also if I would ever do them, so no can cry it's not fair since I am included.

yeah the sicko's and the murders and rapist child molestors if that is social ills than yes we do but like everything else in this great country we have "excuses" why they did what they did and they are the real victims if you start maybe a old west style goverment where you kinda just hung the bastar-ds after they were convicted we wouldnt have as many crimals as we do now

We are an advanced civilisation.
This is where it has evolved to.
If there where a better way to deal with the effects of over population, media manipulation, and religion it would be implemented.

yeah, we find it better than leaving them out on the streat so they can really screw things up like in some other countries
