These days more and more professionals are choosing to stay home with their young children at least until they get to be school age, so you can't assume that at-home moms don't have careers.
You also cannot assume that at-home moms are not in the process of preparing for a career once the children go to school.
I don't think too many young women today just stay home with their kids and plan to never do anything other than that.
The famous line, "You can have it all but you can't have it all at the same time" tends to say how things are for many women these days.

I have a 2 year old daughter and I work full time, however I teach and so am home early and get 13 weeks holiday a year. We are lucky that my husband has his own business and takes one day off a week and for the other four days only works in the morning. I don't know any stay at home Mum's as no-one can see to be able to pay the mortgage these days unless both work. I am sure that for women in lower paid jobs that until your kids go to school it is probably cheaper to stay at home as nursery bills are the same as another mortgage these days and more if you have more than one child.
