Easiest and quickest:
a. use eyeliner before applying the mascara (however, that is even more difficult and needs a calmer hand)
b. find a way to apply mascara without leaving stains. ;)
Do it like I describe below - by the way, there´s nothing wrong with doing your lashes, then doing eyeshadow - then doing your lashes again (one stroke) to cover up any powder. Powder on your lashes gives them more volumne. ;)
Best way to apply mascara is this (as I think you need that more than when to do what): stand in front of the mirror, lean forward far enough so you can really see your eyes - or get a cosmetics mirror that enlarges things. :)
Don´t open your eyes too far as that brings your lashes pretty close to your lids and the rish of smearing them gets higher. So open that one eye you´re going for only half way, then apply the mascara. Set the brush really close to the bottom of your lashes and carefully move it from side to side to give more volumne. Then carefully bring the brush up to the lengths.

Keep your mouth open while you apply the mascara---you will be less likely to blink your eyes! Apply 2-3 light coats instead of one heavy coat. Raising your eyebrows while you apply it sometimes helps, too. I never get mascara on my eyelids.
Also, don't pump the wand in and out of the tube---just stir it around in there, or it puts too much air in the tube and it dries out faster.
I don't wear shadow anymore, but I used to put the shadow on first, and then the mascara. Just go slow, and keep your mouth open! You'll get the hang of it!

Try mascara first, use a damp cotton ball to clean up the mess, then use a creamy eyeshadow or one of those eye shadows that comes in a pencil. This should eliminate your powder on the mascara problem.
In the meantime, when you have nowhere to go, keep practicing with the shadow stuff. It's just motor skills that you develop with practice.

Best if you have a "dry" mascara. i.e. a mascara that isn't really wet. It coats the eyelashes first (and separates them). One then applies a moist mascara - start at the tips of the lashes and then work back to the eyelid. Stops blotches and sticking. Happy eyelashes,
wink.

Yeah, that's a pain. However, I have long eyelashes and have mastered how not to get it on my eyelids. Here's what you do.
If you have a mirror you can stand right up against, use that one. For example, I have a 4ft mirror hanging on my bathroom door. I stand right up against it. I tilt my back, so that I can apply the mascara right at the roots of my lashes. This way your lashes won't be right up against your eyelids when you are trying to apply, and it will look more even.

Hold a business/ credit card between your lashes and the lid. It is a surefire way to apply as much as you want and never make a mistake. Dont forget to comb the lashes to remove the excess with a lash comb. Otherwise, you will have tarantula eyes.

It's all in how well you stretch your face when your applying mascara. And how long your lashes are.
Try tilting your head back.

It just takes practice. A good way to get off mess ups without taking off all you eyemakeup is to wet a q-tip and the masscara comes right off if it hasn't dried yet.
