Do you have a FireWire port on your machine?

They are common on Apple machines but rare on Wintels.

Check if you have a FireWire port (ideally a FW800) or you won't be able to connect it.

If you don't have a FireWire port then you need a USB2 compatible external drive.

One thing to remember with these huge hard drives: the larger they are, the more information you will lose if it crashes. When looking at hard drives of this size, you may want to instead see what the cost of several smaller drives adding up to the same storage space would be. Yeah, it's more cords and plugs when you're talking external drives but, it could also save you from paying a large amount of money to a data recovery agency to get your files off a corrupted hard drive.

Other than that, the hard drive you're talking about is fine.

Go for it! It sounds like a very good drive and an external drive should be no problem with any computer.
NOTE: My computer tries to boot from my external drive if it is plugged it and turned on during start up which causes a startup error. I have to have my external drive turned off during boot up.
An external drive is a super way to do backup, lots of room, fast and very reliable.
