There is such chain in the mail still- that has you send $1 to six people, and guarentees you 800,000$...

This is very impossible simply because it's way to much money. Either impossible or a scam, and it's a scam! I'll explain.

You send $1 to 6 people. And add your name to the list. Unfortunately, they're about 200 million (give or take a few million) LEGAL adults (meaing able to gamble). So right off the bat, if each adult in america sends 1$, we are only allowed 200 million dollars in a money pool. Now if you're guarenteed 800,000 dollars, that means if you divide what we have in the pool (2 million) by the guarenteed income (800,000), you get 250. That 250 represents the people that can make that 800,000 dollars. So these games are GREAT for only the creators, and scam artists that created it, and the following 250 people that played. Once you start getting towards the two hundreds players, you start to run out of money in the pool.

So basically, this is illegal.

How to check it?
Very simple. Does it sound like everyone's going to win, or just the creators? Also, if it's gambling, and it's in the mail, it's illegal!

If it doesn't sound believable, check it out at a website called Snopes.com - it's a site that debunks urban legends, and a lot of chain e-mail hoaxes and schemes. Also, the idea behind them is that they ask you to forward the e-mail to as many people as possible, often promising good fortune or that some sick or dying child will be saved by God-knows-who donating 5 cents per e-mail. All it really succeeds in doing is pissing off the people you send it to, for filling up their inbox with trite, time-consuming crap.
