I'm planning for a canal boat holiday in British Waterways in summer 2007 for 2 people. I'll start from London and my preference is to go North (no return) or do a loop (i.e. oxford canal then grand union and back to London). I'd like to know:
1- What routes would you recommend?
2- How much does it cost to hire a boat for 2 people for 1 week?
3- Where I can hire a cheap boat?
4- Any other recommendation.

Regards

There are many companies in the UK that rent canal boats - sometimes called "narrow boats", for obvious reasons. They are experts at vacation planning.

Let me list a few of the companies that we would use in our agency and some useful info:

Good luck - these are wonderful adventures!

The Kennet and Avon towards Bath is good - there is one very bust stretch of looks near Bath, however.

You can find canal boat operators and events here: http://www.enjoyengland.com/searchresults.aspx?searchparam=kennet%20and%20avon and on http://www.waterscape.com/Kennet_%26_Avon_Canal/wid41;mine364628;maxe473087;minn159414;maxn173905

You can find boat hire costs via the above.

Another starting canal - going South - is the River Wey from the Thames to Guildford in Surrey. Nice and relaxing. http://www.waterscape.com/River_Wey/wid191;mine497352;maxe507541;minn144043;maxn165972
