Because they are fundamentalists who fear that orthodoxy will vanish if outside elements, i.e. other religions, ideologies, etc. are allowed to be freely practised. They have forgotten their own history of marvellous tolerance existed in the previous Islamic empires. What more, they have forgotten the spirit of tolerance embodied in the holy Quran, the Prophet's Sunnah and the Constitution of Medina promulgated by none other than the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself.
I quote:
If one goes by the Qur'anic pronouncements Islam not only accepts the legitimacy of religious pluralism but considers it quite central to its system of beliefs. There are very clear statements to this effect. First we will refer to the verse 5:48 in this respect. The verse goes as follows:" Unto every one of you We have appointed a (different) law and way of life. And if Allah had so willed, He could surely have made you all one single community: but (He willed it otherwise) in order to test you by means of what He has given you. Vie, then, with one another in doing good works! Unto Allah you all must return; and then He will make you truly understand all that on which you were wont to differ."
This is very seminal statement in favour of religious and legal pluralism which Muslims, specially the Muslim regimes, have not considered seriously. Many classical as well as modern commentators have commented on this significant verse...
...It is unfortunate that most of the Muslim countries do not adhere to this spirit of pluralism and diversity in the Qur'an and sunnah. The extremists and fundamentalists among the Muslims in these countries attack the spirit of pluralism and want to create a monolithic society.
End of quote - ISLAM AND PLURALISM by Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer
I think you are aware that I have quoted this one before. The questions are kind of related.
God knows best.
Peace and Love.

Something that was stated above which is incorrect, at least for Tunisia, is that Muslims are not tolerant of other religions. Since living in Tunisia I have met many Tunisian Jews and Catholics (I'm sure there are people of other religions I haven't met yet), and have known some that converted to Christianity when they moved to a different country, such as the USA or France (the most popular destinations for Tunisians), or when they married non-Muslims, or simply because they liked the other religion better.
I am a Catholic who is married to a Tunisian Muslim and we have two children. My husband allows my children to go to church with me and learn about my religion and has said that it will be their decision to choose the religion they want. Most parents here have this mentality.

Muslims seem to have greater relatives connection, like, passing the religion and customs down from technology to technology. To me, it may additionally look undesirable in that comparable admire simply by fact all of us could desire to compliment the suited suited direction ourselves, and if it truly is forced on a guy or woman, they simply understand what they have been instructed by utilising human beings, yet they do no longer understand the actuality for themseves. yet another solid element, how they placed lots concentration on solid deeds - the Bible teaches us that faith & works go at the same time - so i'm able to relate. The coaching is that to do something is pointless devoid of religion and that to have faith is pointless devoid of taking action. Atheists have each now and then stated issues, such simply by fact the undeniable and easy certainty that they are able to have morals whether they are an atheist, and that i admire that. while anybody is open-minded and humble, that's often a stable element. issues in simple terms get undesirable while ppl get prideful & self-righteous.

I think this is because the main root of the teaching of Islam itself. Islam is considered as one of the most strict, puritanical and authoritarian religions on earth ever. Islam as religion basically not that intolerant towards other religions. Muslim people ARE.
They turn upside down the main teaching of Islam and become intolerant and stiff for everything.
They really hate almost everything exists in this life actually. They hate Black people, white people. They hate Christians, Asians. They hate pork, they despise alcohol drinks, they hate all hedonisms.... They hate McDonalds, they hate everything but themselves.... you see what I mean? They already intolerant for those worldly stuffs.
I could say this to you base on my own long surveys and experiences.

Can you please give us the examples of those states you're talking about.
Because if it is happens, it's totally not related of what Islam teaches as Islam teach us to respect the other religion as one of the verse from Quran says
“Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth has been made clear from error. Whoever rejects false worship and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks. And Allah hears and knows all things.” [Surah al-Baqarah: 256]
And when we are talking about attitude, it is unfair to judge base on what religion or race that person is. This problem related to attitude is happening in every part of the world. Various causes. We can find a chapter in psychology book of why people acting this and that. We can write lot of academic thesis of the culture itself.

In the Prophet's time, and even under the rightly guided Caliphs, the People of the Scriptures (Jews and Christians) were allowed to continue their religion, they only had to pay a protection tax (Jizyah). The Idolators on the other hand were adamant against Muhammad so they were the ones who were trying to kill him, but with God's help they were defeated. So the point is that our Prophet did not force anyone to believe. It is important to know that God will not accept any religion other Islam followed the way the Prophet used to live (Pray 5 times a day to God alone, give charity, fast, do good deeds for the sake of pleasing God etc..)
No Compulsion in Religion
Allah said,
[لاَ إِكْرَاهَ فِى الدِّينِ]
(There is no compulsion in religion), meaning, "Do not force anyone to become Muslim, for Islam is plain and clear, and its proofs and evidence are plain and clear. Therefore, there is no need to force anyone to embrace Islam. Rather, whoever Allah directs to Islam, opens his heart for it and enlightens his mind, will embrace Islam with certainty. Whoever Allah blinds his heart and seals his hearing and sight, then he will not benefit from being forced to embrace Islam.''
The person above is right, when culture and religion mix without definite boundaries there are going to be problems, not to mention Satan who is trying ruin all of us...

Well its because for the muslims the Quran have made them beleive that there is only one god and that is allah ..All the ppl in the earth are allah's creation and in a way he is almighty..So when these ppl see other ppl of different religions they feel that the others support the wrong person and they are doin a crime or something...so they become intolerant...Its just some muslims in this world who are not too orthodox and you can also find them in the countries you have mentioned...

Many countries do not have religious freedom. Some are Communist, some Christian, some are Muslim, and some are other religions.
I'm not convinced Muslims have less tolerance than other religions.

Islam and its people are no more or less tolerant than Christianity and its people.
