Sounds like it could possibly be early labor. Sometimes the contractions are really irregular at first and even stop for a while before they really kick in. Check with your doctor or the on call service as soon as you can, they might want to see you or have you go to the hospital to get checked out. If nothing else, they will reassure you.

If you were in labor, you would still be having contractions. They don't go away. What you were experiancing probably was Braxton Hicks. They can be painful at times. They don't always feel the same. If your contractions have stopped then you are not in labor. The bottle of water, however, was an excellent idea! Sometimes these Braxton Hicks can be brought on by dehydration. The next time this happens, I wouldn't suggest taking anything for it. Instead try walking, or changing your position. If they go away, it was "false labor" and if they don't call your doctor up.

I wanted to add something. You said these pains were in the bottom of your stomach? It's also possible that you had gas. The kind that just sits on your stomach and hurts like hell. That happened to me a few times during my last pregnancy. If they were contractions, you would feel your whole stomach tighten, or ball up. If you place your fingers at the top of the fundus, you should feel it get as hard as a rock, during a contraction.

Hope this helps!
