While they are normally very safe to use, there are exceptions when there is a defect or worn seal in the microwave. The FDA allows a small amount of leakage (negligible) and emission is greatest within 2 inches of the oven.

The recommendation is to have them checked periodically to make sure there's not more serious emission. Also, it's not a good idea to stand right in front of it and look into the microwave as the eyes are the most vulnerable part of the body for absorbing the microwaves.

There has been some concerns raised to the longer term cumulative effect of microwaves.

Microwave-oven invented in Germany. Yet use of microwave-oven is outlawed in Germany. Standing within 100 feet in any direction of the best shielded microwave-oven when in use is unsafe.Long term dangers unknown , information supressed or technology still to new to have sufficient data. Although it's very well known that food cooked by microwaves continues to cook for upto 2 minutes after microwave production stops. So let food stand atleast 1min after it dings to let the food absorb the heat energy, otherwise you will be transfering hot spots of energy from the cooking food toward your tissues , cooked tissue =dead cellular material.......The microwave is just another way to deplete our societies food even further from it's life giving substance, making us as a society more dependent on the pharmaceutical companies whom only treat symptoms, not addressing the root cause of said symptoms.

Newer (10 years old or less) are adequately shielded so no danger to people with pacemakers. So long as you wait 15 seconds minimum, to allow dispersal of microwave radiation from the food, all nuked food id safe to eat. Ignore the crazy paranoid peoples's answers.
