Do it yourself, but take their tours as an example.

Four of us went to Florida with Virgin and they 'allocated' us a 'compact' car. For four adults? You can't even get two suitcases in the back of a compact car. Then there's also the insurance scam, they wanted to charge us a ridiculous amount for insurance, more than an all inclusive unlimited mileage deal with a normal renter. But fortunately I had done my homework, so I walked over to the Alamo desk and picked up my full size car with full insurance and saved money too.

A few times a year I take a road trip round the north east or north west, I've always just rented a vehicle and driven off after work. I've never had a problem finding a hotel room (came pretty close in Halifax, Nova Scotia once). I have never regretted not having to answer to someone else's schedule.

They may or may not use better hotels and that's a choice too, last time I chose a good hotel in Banff and a cheap place when it was just somewhere to stop for the night.
