Well yea, you need to keep an active mind. Doing crossword puzzles help, you will be surprized how works. Putting puzzles together is another way. Maybe taking a class at a college, close to you. Play memory games with childern, where you have to remember where the same picture was that matches this one. Not stressing yourself out, and relaxing, that way your mind is not always in the worry mood, and getting stressed, then having problems, cause it is full of things to worry about. Just keeping attive i have found, and being around younger people then you. It helps to be around them, that way you don't get feeling like an ole fart. Just learn to relax, and let those worries go for a while, so your mind can be cleared, and can then remember things better.
hope this has helped you.

sharpen, yes. The brain, like anything else responds to exercise. Unfortunately it may not hold true as you get older. My ma is in a home and has dementia. She barely remembers anything including my pa. While she was "ok" she read, did crossword and number puzzles, all in the name of keeping her brain sharp. Lot of good it did her.

there is a theory recently that taking ginko baloba supplements can have long term benefits on memory and possibly prevent or delay Alzheimers. but it hasnt been used long enough yet to know if its effective. reading, playing scrabble, crossword puzzles, continuing adult education courses, and being socially active are all supposed to keep your brain and memory sharp as you head into your golden years.

Stay active, read, continue to learn. If you become stagnant...so will your brain. There is something to be said about the ole saying; "If you don't use it you'll lose it"
