It was originally housed in the Guggenheim Museum because Picasso did not want it in Spain until Franco died. Back in the '70's there was in fact a big Picasso exhibition there, with the Guernica being its central master piece. After the generalissimo kicked the bucket, the painting was taken to Madrid, as per Picasso's wishes.

That's a very good question The only
problem is there's no confirmation of
where it is. Most people are of the notion
that Claude Picasso has it in his possession.
There is a tapestry (copy) of it hanging at the
U.N. in New York city..
