Our dog was very old.. about 18 or 19 and was in pain. We couldnt figure out for why and today she started having blood in her stool.

So she was laying there and we were trying to decide what to do, since its friday and it was late when it happened we were all watching her and all of a sudden she just stoped breathing.
And I saw her take her last breath i know some of you arnt as sensitive as I am but I have known this dog my whole life.
All day today she has been crying and just stoped.
We didnt know what to do atthe time.
She has been crying for a while sometimes when she tried to get up to go outside but you know thats it we just thought her legs were hurting.
I guess it was more than that...

I don't believe the Bible speaks specifically to "putting an animal out of its misery", however as God calls us to be stewards over all creation, and as sometimes that is the only remedy for a creature's suffering, I believe that we are to do whatever we can to help that animal get beyond it's pain. At the same time, I think there is a difference when talking about an animal that is very old... because that animal's age may not be an accurate indicator of when it is ready to die. Additionally, there are other influences which affect when an animal is ready.

For example, there is a big difference between the life expectancy of a cat that is "indoor only" and one that is "indoor/outdoor".

As sad a plight as it might be, you should actually pay attention to your elderly animals... they will let you know when they are ready... and depending on the animal's personality, he may even remove himself from the family when he's ready.

Take care of God's creatures.. both human and animal...

It is not right to put an animal down simply because it is old, provided it is in good health. That's like putting down gramma because she's old and drooling.

Pain is a different issue entirely. It can be so difficult to let go of a loved pet, but you have to ask yourself if you are holding on because you cannot bear to let it go, or because there really is hope of a recovery that would lead to a happy and pain free existance.

If something is suffering and isn't going to make it then yes i think it is ok to put the animal down. A few years ago my dog was hit by a car. She was hurt so bad that she ended up with kidney failure. There was nothing we could do so my dad took her out back and shot her. He came back crying becuase she was such a good dog. And the person who hit her was drunk and driving to fast. I grew up on a farm and on our road by our house and barn there is an animal crossing area. There was never a need to have our animals on a leash. But some people see and old country road and think they can drive as fast as they please. So to stop suffering yes I think it is ok to put an animal down.

I have no idea what my Religion believes as I was instructed by my Grandmother in her beliefs, Roman Catholic/High Church of England based. She would answer this question with " suffer not little children but come unto me". Please excuse me if I have paraphrased here a bit.
My Grandmother was well ahead of her time or a very practical woman, not sure which.
If an animal is suffering and it had no chance of surviving or having a life with value then don't let it suffer. She believed it was far kinder to have it put down than let it suffer agonising pain that was going to end with their death or to die painfully from old age.
Old age in animals is as unkind to them as us. She would say "only they cannot tell us where or what hurts". She also taught us to believe they were in heaven with our family members who had passed on and were happy.
Just my thoughts on what is obviously a painfull time for you.

I am a survivor,. and will fight to stay alive regardless of if i was on my dieing breath or not,...

I think since we can't understand if animals value life as we do,. I give them the benifit of the doubt,..

a prime example is my cat,...

she was a strray kitty i found in a bush with her neck torn open and bleeding,.. everyone said to have her put down,..

i siad,.. FUC@ that!!!,.. i cleaned the wound,. and pieced ha back together as best as i could,..

it took 3 weeks for the wounds to close,...

i had her shots updated and such, and now she resides with me.... sure,. i could have let the vet put her down,... but i figured she had a few of her nine lives left,. i wasn't going to give up..

i have assited several animals in lost casue situations heal and live,... i just don't think killing something to be rid of it, or making a decision like that for it is okay...

even if the thing is termiinally ill,... i still have some doubt as to whether executing it is the way to go

I think it would be better to help a very ill animal pass on.A few months ago,my duck got very ill.It was very hard to see him suffer, and he couldn't breathe,so we put him to sleep. As for my religion, there is nothing specific written about animal euthanasia ,but we should be kind and be stewards of our animals. This would be one of the times when it's kind to help an animal pass on.But if the only thing is that it's old,but not suffering, just let him be.
I'm very sorry that you are going through this.I know how hard it is.

Well, hmmm...if the animal is in irreversible pain, think about it...would you want to continue seeing them or having them be in pain just so you can still be with them, no matter how much it pains you to see them like that? If the animal is just very old, let them live out the rest of their days with you...I'm sure any animal will pick dying while laying next to you in a comfy warm bed as opposed to dying with cold veterinarian's hands groping them.

This is an easy one. My grandfather died of lung cancer. He was euthanised. He was 85 yrs. old. can you hate me for being glad that he died? Animals are in our care on earth and it is the very least we can do to help them die when it is time to do so. What pisses me off is the people who leave their pets here in the country to die. These people think that animals are better off in the wilderness because their nature is to be wild. We find starving animals an our property all the time. We put them down. I dont know why you are asking but my opinion is that all livung creatures deserve to die with dignity.

I have never experienced this type of situation, but I would like to say I would be able to put the animal out of misery if it could not possibly be saved
