To me, it's the inner judge of moral issues. Its that little voice that says to us... You know you shouldn't do that, or its alright to do this.
It's awaking was just one of the results of Adam, and him disobeying God. Just as the Serpent (Satan) Told Eve... For in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, as you shall be as god's (knowing good and evil.)
In the world we live in, it is mankind of whom most says what is right and wrong, in their own eyes and not what God says is right and wrong.
Righteousness means what is right in God's eye. Self-righteousness is what is right in mans eye.

Spiral Dynamics teaches of mean consciences. They have a very good web sight which can be found by google searching.
In general any average is going to affect us based on our own relationship to the average. If we are below the average, then hopefully the average will help us to rise higher. If we are at the average or 'higher' then it would be our own choices determining whether we raise the average or not. This can be influenced by the average based on our choices and our convictions.
For example, you can read. You wouldn't be able to use this forum by yourself if you couldn't. This would put you in the average for this forum. Since you wrote your question very clearly with no chat-room slang, I would personally say you are in the higher levels of this forum, since this shows an ability to type and think. If you exposed yourself to this forum for long, it would be possible that your higher qualities might drop due to the large numbers of people who do not choose to type correctly. If you however choose diligently to continue to type well, ask meaningful questions and in other ways raise the standard for the average it is quite possible for the average to adjust to a 'higher' ability.
So, if you want to help the average man, keep striving to be above average.

concience is God's unique design for human as we created as His Likeness. Your heart can weigh every move you take that lead into good or bad and your concience will represent as guilt if you made something wrong. It is a moderator.
