Well first off all how lucky are you I loved New York with the huge sky scrappers... The Empire state building is an absolute must...Central park, and going on the pony and trap in the early evening is nice apart from a bit smelly lol... Take a trip on the boat to Liberty Island to see the statute of Liberty... walk around the streets see the lights of the theatre's and all the big shops Macey's, toys r us with the ferris wheel inside is cool to see.. take a yellow cab trip.. food is wonderful and big, bagels, New York cheese cake, lots of little dehli's around just enjoy and the night time is excellent... It is fairly expensive but well worth a visit...

You don't say when you are planning to go but I would suggest that these are a must for anyone regardless of age going to New York and we are planning to do these trips/sightseeing when we go in 2007...

Empire State Building (ESB) (take a trip up elevator to the Observatory Platform - in the evening very romantic) On 14th February, the ESB is lit up red for St Valentines Day.

Statue of Liberty - take the Staten Island Ferry (it's free and get a close up view of the Statue from a boat).

Ice skate in the Rockefeller Center (Centre for us English!) if it's during the winter when you go (and remember to wrap up warm as it can be really bitter and even snowing).

Take a walk down 5th Avenue and window shop (free unless the girlfriend has other ideas). Check out Tiffany and Co for some wonderful jewellery if you can afford it! The girlfriend might also like Macy's and Bloomingdales (Department Stores).

Take a yellow cab ride over Brooklyn Bridge or walk...

Pay a quiet reflective visit to Ground Zero (the site of the former Twin Towers).

Take a horse drawn carriage ride through Central Park and visit the Strawbery Fields memorial garden to John Lennon (of The Beatles).

Good places to eat are: The Empire Diner in Chelsea, Ellen's Stardust Diner - where the waitresses often burst into song in Broadway and Katz Deli where you can order a pastrami on rye for $9 (about £4.50 at the current exchange rate to the Pound) but it is huge so you might want to share or take some of it away with you for later in the day).

If you want to find the City through a native New Yorker's eyes you might want to contact a Big Apple Greeter - multi lingual volunteers who take you around parts of New York for free:

www.bigapplegreeter.org

Cheap Broadway Tickets for a musical or play can be purchased from a TKTS booth - www.tdf.org/tkts/.

We are really looking forward to our trip and we hope you and your girlfriend have a great time too!

The legal drinking age in NYC is 21, but there are clubs that are 18 and over, and there will be parties for NYE that are 18 over. Check out www.clubplanet.com and look up the 18+ parties.
